Jonathan Swift started writing �Gulliver�s Travels� in 1726. He started writing in the reign of King George the 1st who was said to be mad and was a very questionable king for a ruling country. Many people didn�t like the way the country was ruled but wouldn�t say anything as they would probably be executed. Swift uses �Gulliver�s Travels� as a travelogue with allegory, so most people in Britain, (along with King George) wouldn�t understand what Swift was saying. In the first few paragraphs of the book Gulliver represents himself to the reader as a respectable man who wouldn�t do wrong. It says �He sent me to Emanuel College in Cambridge at fourteen years old, where I resided three years, and applied myself close to my studies� And �I was bound apprentice to Mr. James Bates, an eminent surgeon in London, with whom I continued four years� This shows that Gulliver has grown up as a hardworking honest man.
