Heart of Darkness: Was Conrad a Racist? The term “racist” is used to describe, “A person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others”, and that is exactly how the father of modern African literature, Chinua Achebe, described the author of Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad. Due to this reason, the question of whether or not a novel in which this kind of dehumanization is present should be recognized as a great piece of literature can be raised. In this piece of literature, Conrad made it common practice to use such racially-motivated terms such as; “nigger”, “savages”, and “cannibals” in reference to people of color. Although these terms didn’t carry the same significance as they do today, the fact that the novel is somewhat of an autobiography of Conrad, reflects negatively on both his character as well as, his workings. As a result of the negative terminology used to describe people of color in “Heart if Darkness”, the statement can be made that Joseph Conrad is a racist, and his novel shouldn’t be celebrated as great piece of writing. “Joseph Conrad was thor......
