1.Introduction to Descartes and Rationalism Rene Descartes was born at La Haye, France, in 1596. He attended a Jesuit college and took a doctorate in low form the University of Poitiers in 1616. Two years later in 1618 he traveled to Holland, where he joined the army of Prince Maurice of Nassau. As he made no mark as a soldier in 1619 and while campaigning in Germany and under the influence of the Dutch mathematician and scientist Beeckman, Descartes began his mathematical studies of natural phenomena and discovered his vocation as a thinker. After a lot of traveling in far away places for over a decade, where he met a lot of mathematicians and physicists he decided to move to Holland where he lived for 20 years, composing great works of cosmology, mathematics, geometry, physics, meteorology and philosophy. It is important to notice that during those years he wrote most of his great works and made his great foundation of what is now known as analytic geometry (the use of geometrical analysis to solve complex algebraic problems, and vice versa). ......
