How does the author of the following extract from A Fable for Tomorrow use language to convey changes and contrasts in mood and meaning? The opening paragraph of A Fable for Tomorrow conveys the beautiful image of a fertile American town. The mood is tranquil and takes the reader to a place “where all life seemed to live in harmony”. The author describes elements of nature and wildlife to express an idyllic idea of man and nature in synchronization. A town sits “in the midst of a checkerboard of prosperous farms”, “foxes barked in the hills” and “the deer silently crossed the fields”. The prosperity that man enjoys is echoed in the abundance of berries for “the countless birds”. Even the “seed heads of the dried weeds” are flourishing despite the snow. The author describes lush vegetation, “hillsides of orchards” and “green fields” and depicts the seasons by their colours. In spring we see “white clouds of bloom …….. above the green fields”.
