Dropping the 'A' Bomb Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

President Harry Truman had only been president for twelve days when he had to make the decision on whether or not dropping the bomb on the Japanese. Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, was the person who wrote the note and gave it to President Truman on April 24, 1945. They met the next day and Stimson was prepared to present convincing information of what would happen if President Truman were to decide to drop the bomb. Truman said that he “regarded the bomb as a military weapon and never had any doubt that it should be used.” Evidence today says otherwise. Before this, World War II in the European countries had just ended and Franklin D. Roosevelt had just died days before the unconditional surrender of the Germans. Stimson’s view of the bomb was that it was capable of saving countless American lives and the president will look better after the war. On the other hand, Dwight D. Eisenhower did not like it because he felt that the Japanese were on the verge of surrendering and didn’t want to see his country to use a weapon of such magnitude. Ralph A.
