Esperanza Cordero es una niña joven que vive en Chicago con su familia chicana. La familia se tenia que mudar por las condisiones del apartamento. Como ellos son pobres no tienen el dinero sufficiente para reparar el apartamento. Por eso la familia de Esperanza se mudara. Son una familia de seis miembros; Su mama,papa,Kiki,Carlos,Nenny,y ella. Ellos ahora se van a mudar a una casa en un barrio pequeño que se llama Mango Street. A Esperanza le gusta su casa ahora porque es de ellos. Y no tienen que preocuparse de pagarle la renta al propietario. Ni de compartir su patio con los vecinos. Pero la casa no era como la casa de su sueño como sus padres le cuentan. Una casa grande con patio,tres baños para no esperar,un jardin,y rodeadas de arbol......
