Knowledge is taken to mean belief that was justified to an absolute certainty. In life, we assume that all of our knowledge comes from our everyday experiences and our sensory perception of the world. However, this overlooks the factor of innate or a priori knowledge we may also have. There are philosophical reasons and ideas discussed by Descartes and Kant that shows part of our knowledge is innate, and not all comes from experience. David Hume was an empiricist. His works and ideas show that only things we can perceive become knowledge. He believes that knowledge is formed from experience and he emphasizes the impressions of cause and effect. He denies we could have any idea of causation other than when we see 2 events that always occur together. And that when we see the repetition and identical occurrences, we tend to form an expectation. An example used by Hume was billiard balls. Whenever one sees a billiard ball rolling towards another billiard ball, we assume that the second ball will be in motion when the first one strikes it.
