'The Others’ and ‘The Castle of Otranto’ comparative essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

It is the ability of great texts to have a universal meaning that allows individuals from varying contexts of reception to interpret it in a multitude of critical approaches.This is prevalent through the Gothic texts, The film ‘The Others’ by Alejando Amenabar, and the novel ‘The Castle of Otranto’ by Horace Walpole. Although certain parallels can be drawn between both the texts regarding fundamental gothic literature, including supernaturalism and the gothic element, there are significant contrasts in the representation of gothic literature from the romantic era to a more contemporary era primarily due to the shifts in time periods. Gothicism is characterised by the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. Both texts incorporate similar elements of Gothism, however, the shift in time frames have altered the way in which Gothism has been represented in both texts.
