In a time when racism dictated the attitude of our nation, and segregation hindered the potential of the African American race, one man rose above discrimination and fought for equality. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights leader born in Montgomery Alabama in 1929, made a significant social impact in America. He majored in Sociology in college but opted later to enter the ministry. Martin Luther King, Jr. accomplished more in thirty-nine years than most people do in a lifetime. Tragically, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Over the course of his life, he witnessed The Great Depression, he supported Rosa Parks when she refused to give up her bus seat, and he created history himself with his infamous "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963. Because of King's strong passion for equality and nonviolence, he was also subject to criticism. Some say Martin Luther King intentionally placed himself in the line of danger, he could be so visionary that he might turn people away, and lastly that he was a guilt-ridden man because of his great responsibility.
