It may be stated with little hesitation that Hernando Cortes is an individual who significantly altered the course of human history forever. His pivotal role in the exploration and subsequent conquest of the New World, on the behalf of Spain, was and remains an integral factor in the shaping and development of the modern world. Assuming his circumstances, it is likely that Cortes had only a slight inclination that he would encounter organized indigenous societies, he most probably had not the vaguest idea that his expedition into a foreign land would lead to an eventual clash of civilizations. When Cortes set out from Cuba in 1519, it is commonly understood that the primary objective for his expedition was to search the new frontier for its supposed riches and resources, namely gold and other precious metals.
