Macbeth and Dead White Males Gender Representation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Concepts of males and females can be said to be everlasting, although as gender is a cultural construct defining ideas of masculinity and femininity, the concept of gender adapts with societal norms regarding men and women. This can be seen when studying both Macbeth written by William Shakespeare and Dead White Males written by David Williamson. Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's most famed tragedies, was written in Elizabethan England, sometime between 1603 and 1607 whereas Dead White Males is a modern Australian play, first performed in 1995. It is therefore conclusive that the representations of men and women espoused in both plays are fundamentally differing despite definite similarities, due to concepts of gender evolving over time. The representations of men and women in the two plays are via the male and female characters; in Macbeth these characters are Lady Macbeth, Lady Macduff, Macbeth, in Dead White Males the characters are Sarah Judd, Martin Judd and Grant Swain.
