A coming of age piece is one which displays growth in the story's protagonist throughout his or her journey. Based on the comic book by Daniel Clowes, Ghost World is a film which shows the after-highschool life of the story's protagonist Enid, and her best friend Rebecca. The director, Terry Zwigoff, does an amazing job in not turning this teenage film into the stereotypical teens out of highschool movie. Although this movie has the all the aspects that would make this an average teen movie, main characters who are going nowhere, aimless side characters, high school graduation, parents who know nothing, and sexual encounters, this film is anything but average. This movie doesn't believe high school is the root of youth complications; it knows that school isn't where the confusion lies, it's after graduation when the complexities begin. Since this is a coming of age film, one has to distinguish what the main events are that shape Enid's character. Daniel Clowes shows Enid's "transformation" through a series of events, her ways of needing to be something that is not of cultural norm....
