‘Romeo and Juliet’ is often regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, but perhaps more importantly, one of the finest and most well known love stories ever to be written. As well as Shakespeare’s great talent as a playwright, this is mainly due to the fact that there is more than just one type of love explored in the play. In fact, there are many aspects of love that appear throughout the story and this is what gives the play so many different paths to explore, whilst giving the plot a multi-layered appearance. The dictionary defines love as “an intense feeling of deep affection.” I intend to explore the four main kinds of love that are the most important in the play; they are courtly love, sexual love, dutiful love and true love. The play itself was written in 1595, during the reign of Elizabeth I. During her reign, the majority of the English population was Protestant, as was Elizabeth herself. As religion was extremely important at that time, a lot of anti-Catholic propaganda was used. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a prime example. The setting of the play is in the city ....
