Some major devas written in chapter three are Indra the god of thunder, Agni the god of fire, Soma, and Ushas the goddess of dawn. These gods were thought to be a manifestation of ultimate reality. Believers in the method of devotion were supposed to worship their god through sacrifices and rituals dedicating their lives to the belief and were expected to be saved from the realm of maya by the manifestation of ultimate reality to which they entrusted their lives. Sacred texts called the Vedas on which Hinduism was founded were the main origin of several different branches of the Hindu philosophy. The Vedas origins are unknown. The Vedas consisted of four parts called the Samhitas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and Upanishads. The dates of the writings are also unknown but are thought to be written sometime in the middle of the first millennium.
