Harry Jerome was born on September 30th 1940 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Elsie and Harry Sr. Jerome. Harry and his family eventually moved to North Vancouver in the 1950�s. In high school his talent was revealed when at age 18 he broke Percy Williams 31 year old record in the 220 yard sprint. His efforts led him to the University of Oregon on an athletic scholarship. In 1960, at age 19 he ran 100 meters in 10.0 seconds and became the first Canadian to officially hold a world track record. Later that year he became the first man to share the 100 yard record, at a time of 9.2 seconds. His 100 meter record stood until the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Unfortunately injuries began to hold him back, at the 1960 Olympics in Rome he pulled a muscle in the heats and didn�t qualify for the 100 yard run. In 1962 at the Commonwealth Games trouble struck again when he suffered a severe muscle injury requiring him to spend six months in a cast. His prognosis was he would never run again. However he proved his doctor and the critics wrong by recovering and winning the Bronze medal at the 1964 ....
