Florida statue states that the purpose of the Department of Corrections is to protect the public through the incarceration and supervision of offenders and to rehabilitate offenders through the application of work, programs, and services (FGAR). Programs weather it is educational, vocational or for reintegration purposes have come a long way and have proven in many ways to benefit and lower recidivism. There are many programs offered at both the juvenile and adult facility levels. However, one problem is that not all prisons (private/state/federal) take advantage of incorporating these programs into their facilities to benefit not only them but the inmates as well. Another issue that has received strong attention is programs for the geriatrics� and the mentally ill inmates. The most important programs to have are educational programs. It is amazing how many inmates are illiterate. Correctional education and programs contribute to institutional security....
