Bookreport: PUFFBALL – Fay Weldon. Question 1: Explain the significance of the title of the book and why you do or don not, think it is appropriate. Suggest an alternative title and defend you choice. Liffey, one of the main characters of the book, becomes pregnant and she compares her growing belly with the shape of a puffball. This comparison goes so far that when her neighbour Mabs pierces with a knife in the very centre of a puffball and twists the knife, Liffey has the feeling that Mabs does this with her and that Mabs wants to kill her. All throughout the book puffballs are mentioned, as for example: Mabs and Tucker treat them as disgusting, ugly and useless things. When you are aware of the association Liffey has with puffballs it gets a deeper meaning. She also feels that she is ugly and disgusting and useless. Richard, Bella and Ray see puffballs as delicious and good firelighters. You also can project this thought on Liffey, especially in relation to love and sex. So in this book, human behaviour towards puffballs stand for what their feelings could be in relation ....
