A puritan theocracy now controls the former United States called the Republic of Gilead and Handmaids are recruited to repopulate the state. This social order ultimately offers women more respect and safety than the old, pre-Gilead society offered them. Women in The Republic of Gilead are protected from the evils of the outside world. The evils consist of what men could do to them or what they could do to themselves. Aunt Lydia said to the girls "There is more than one kind of freedom...Freedom to and freedom from.
