After reviewing �The Gothic Cathedral,� "Gothic Sculpture," and "Stained Glass" (Fiero, 2006, Bk. 2, pp. 123-134) I was in awe of the design details and intricacies in all three forms. When reviewing the cathedrals I was struck with a feeling that these cathedrals were dismal and scary, yet after thinking on this further and adding the readings in the book they were designed quite well. They really did mean to "scare" people into being good, rising up to a higher purpose after death. As Spore (2002) notes, "Gothic cathedrals use refined, upward-striving lines to symbolize humanity's upward striving to escape the bound of earth and enter the mystery of space (the kingdom of heaven)." Striving to get into heaven and avoid the eternal damnation to hell was a powerful message to be enforced by the churches and these great cathedrals. The building of the Gothic Cathedral also noted to be an endeavor of the town or city in which they were constructed, bring community pride to the effort. Fiero notes that, �Medieval towns competed with one another in the grandeur of their cathedrals� (p. ....
