Egypt was home to many advanced cities including its capital Memphis and the large city of Alexandria. Menes of Tanis, who united the two kingdoms of Egypt, founded Memphis around 3100 BC. Memphis was home to about 30,000 inhabitants; it was the largest settlement worldwide at the time. Memphis was most successful under the 6th Dynasty under the pharaoh Ptah. Its success declined briefly after the 18th Dynasty with the rise of Thebes and was revived under the Persian officials before falling into second place after the foundation of Alexandria. Under the Roman Empire, Alexandria remained the most important city. It remained the second city of Egypt until the establishment of Al Fustat in 641.
