Abstract The paper to follow will analyze the working capital and financial environment of the Target and Wal-Mart Corporations. The working capital will be described as well as quantified, explain the functions of intermediaries and financial regulatory bodies and finally the implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) of 2002 and its affect on Target and Wal-Mart. The research method utilized was through company annual reports as well as web based sites and class material. The research concluded that both companies saw increases in net working capital from 2005 to 2006. Wal-Mart and Target use the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) for internal controls for financial reporting. SOX has had a profound effect on the financial reporting of both corporations in the stance that the Chief Executive Officer is held legally and financially responsible for accuracy of the financial reporting.
