Taxation in the eighteenth century was in the form of internal and external taxes. Internal being fines such as the Stamp Act, and external being, for example, various tariffs imposed on the importation and exportation of goods to and from the colonies such as the Townshend Acts. Taxes were to the British, a means of control and revenue.
