Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii: Buried Alive Mt. Vesuvius, a roughly 4,300 feet high, deadly volcano, is located near the Bay of Naples, in the region of Campania, in Italy. Mt. Vesuvius is famous for its eruption on August 24th A.D. 79, which destroyed the cities of Herculaneum, Stabiae, and Pompeii and killed thousands of their residents. Pompeii was buried under 10 feet of material set in motion by the eruption of the volcano, while Herculaneum was buried under 75 feet of ash. Pompeii and Herculaneum remained buried until the eighteenth century. Since then, the land at the bottom of the volcano has provided the world with an image frozen in time of life in Italy during the first century. There were many eruptions after A.D. 79 and it is likely that there were more before A.D. 79. The eruption in A.D. 79 was the first one described in detail by a witness. During the eruptions the citizens fled to the chambers or the beach. Some citizens were not able to flee or hadn’t reached the beach or chambers because the eruption was so sudden.
