Act 1 Scene 1 In the dimly lit hold of a convict ship on its way to Australia. The convicts huddle together. On the deck a convict by the name of sideway is being flogged. Second lieutenant Ralph Clark counts the lashes. Sideway is then brought back to the other convicts. John Wisehammer; John Arscott and Mary Brenham express their fear, hunger and their want for home. Scene 2 A lone Aboriginal Australian describes the arrival of the convict�s ship. The Native sees the ship as something to leave alone. He describes it as a lost dream. Scene 3 The governor, judge, Captain Walkin and Harry brewer are shooting birds. They are debating weather it is fair that 3 men should be hanged for stealing for the colonies stores. The governor (Phillip) thinks that it will make the convicts change their ways in their new environment. Where as the judge (Collins) believes the law must be up held and respected. Tench thinks that any convict is beyond redemption and deserve what they get; and Harry says the convicts have become immune to hangings and refers to it as �their theatre.� This is t....
