The Rise of Women The �The Awakening,� written by Kate Chopin, was printed in a time of vast changes in both the economy and the equality of people; especially women who were growing to be more and more ambitious in life. These women became inspired to change their status of all women in the United States. However, the middle class was not the only class to be affected by the changes which occurred in this time period. The lower class women of this time were also affected. It is evident that the view of females such as Chopin�s �The Awakening� reflects lower class women to be insignificant. In the novel, they exist largely as support for the main character. Looking back at this time period, industrialization of the economy is one of the biggest factors for women�s ambition to rise up. There was a change in gender employment roles, which would bleed over into the other societal roles played by women.
