Fear of Survival In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses fear to create savagery in a group of boys who crash on an island, and the lack of adult supervision causes them to �create a volatile mixture of fear and violence�(Great Books Video). The island becomes a microcosm of the adult world, which is at war with other countries and leaders, destroying one another. Golding uses Piggy, Jack, Simon, and Ralph to represent man�s inherent conflicts and motivations. Piggy is �intellectual and logical� and in three scenes he acts to reveal these traits: when he finds the conch, when he assists the smaller children, and when he is killed at castle rock (Oldsey). Piggy�s previous experiences help him to tell Ralph how to use the conch to call the others. Piggy says, �He blew from down there,� and this reveals Piggy�s wealth of knowledge and experience (17).
