The Great War as a modern paradigm “In the Great War eight million people died because two persons, the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his Consort, had been shot.” In the first chapter of the book The Great War and Modern Memory the author Paul Fussell immediately demonstrates his view of the Great War as ironic.
