Over time, as more and more heat has built up, a noticeable increase in the Earths average temperature has occurred. This temperature increase is referred to as global warming. Although we have not yet seen the long-term effects of global warming, recent trends suggest severe consequences. One of such consequences is the increasing rate in which the polar ice caps are melting. Since 1979, the summer polar ice caps surrounding the North Pole have diminished by nearly 20%.
