Sydney�s Opera House is the home of a true risk taking design which has launched itself upon the environment as a building with great success. It is one of the most distinctive and famous 20th century buildings. Though, it was not erected without complications which may be deemed as part of its risk taking design. The birth of the opera house began in 1946 when Eugene Goossens, a Belgian-British musician who had been the conductor of the Cincinnati orchestra, arrived in Australia as a guest conductor of the Sydney Symphony. At the time, Goossens was astonished to find that there were no theatres large enough to stage medium operas and that no concert hall existed in Sydney. As a result, in 1947 he told reporters that a home for an opera company, fine concert hall for the orchestra and a smaller hall for chamber music became one of his ambitions (The Sydney Morning Herald (n.d.). cited in The Genesis of the Sydney Opera House) since becoming the resident conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Director of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music.
