The piece of artwork I chose to research is the painting by Jack Vettriano, entitled The Singing Butler. Although for some critics Jack Vettriano is known for his somewhat vulgar paintings and his lack of imagination, this painting is known for its classiness and elegance. Born in Fife, Scotland in 1951, Jack Vettriano has come from the unlikely backgrounds of an early working life in the Scottish coal-fields and has become one of Britain's most well known contemporary artists; interesting fact is, he is completely self taught. His work first came to public fame at the Royal Scottish Academy open exhibition in 1988. Since then there have been selling out exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and New York. Although his work is generally dismissed by art critics as being vulgar and devoid of imagination, he is one of the most commercially successful living artists. His original paintings now regularly bring six figure prices, but he is thought to make more money from the sale of reproductions. According to The Guardian, he earns �500,000 ($689,350.91) a year ....
