The importance of family and togetherness are stressed throughout The Grapes of Wrath. Chapter three opens to a turtle attempting to cross a highway. After overcoming the obstacles of climbing an embankment and a concrete wall, he now faced a new challenge. A red ant ran into the land turtle�s shell which obviously bothered him. All the parts of the turtle then came together and retreated inside the shell, which would crush the red ant bothering the turtle. Each part of the turtle, the head, the legs and the tail represented an individual in a family or group. This symbolized the power of togetherness for when all came together, the goal was accomplished. ....
