By the mid-fourteenth century, the pandemic known as the �Black Death� had reached the shores of Italy and started to spread through Western Europe. Yercinia pestis is a bacterium that lives in rodents and is what caused the Black Plague. However, the knowledge of what caused the dismal symptoms of the plague was not known until the nineteenth century, when there was better technology that helped discover the truth. Up until it was known that yercinia pestis is what actually caused the outbreak, most people from 1346-1353 thought it was something more than a disease. �Many people during those times believed it was �the Will of God� punishing mankind for all the sin and evils the world embraced. The bacteria traveled from Eastern countries (modern day China and Mongolia), in mice and rats, along trade routes all the way to Europe. The fleas from those rodents is what caused humans to contract this disease.� (in-class film #1). This disease had two different forms which are known as bubonic and pneumonic plague.
