Although most of the main characters that have been analyzed are human, it is hard forget how monsters have been key players in the development of stories. In the stories of Beowulf and in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, monsters or ogre-like characters are important figures to the plot lines. It is easy to see the similarities between Caliban and Grendel when it comes to outward appearance. Although Caliban looks like a monster, he is actually the son of a witch hag and the devil. However, anyone who sees him thinks of him as a monster, not as a deformed human. This is true for Grendel as well. Grendel is a descendent of Cain (who was human) and Grendel’s mother is also portrayed with human-like attributes. Both are hideous creatures who frighten most that come in contact with them, especially Grendel. Grendel, who is the first monster introduced in Beowulf, is a monster that terrorizes and wreaks havoc on the Danes. Grendel shows human-like characteristics and is even sometimes depic....
