It developed in the late 1940�s and early 50�s, when the racial tension came to surface. The term �Rock and Roll� is originally a nautical term, which was used by sailors. It refers to the motions of a ship: rock is the fore and aft motion, roll describes the sideways motion. It entered the music branch in the 1800�s where it was used in a religious meaning mostly by black gospel singers. They sang songs like �Rock me Lord�, �I Call Jesus my Rock� or �Rockin� and Rolling in the Arms of Moses�. African Americans also used the word rocking for the rapture they experienced at religious events and to describe the rhythm of the music accompanying those events.
