This was one of the statements used on posters both in Australia and Internationally, advertising the film ‘Jedda’ which was released in 1955, at the ‘Star Picture Theatre’, Darwin. The film was controversial at it’s time of release due to the use of two aboriginals playing the lead roles. Yet in any film made today, there would be no questions or any debate over the racial backround of any actor in a film. That’s where the film ‘The Tracker’ directed by Rolf De Heer and released in 2002 shows a positive view on Aboriginal culture. The lead character, ‘The Tracker’ is played by an Aboriginal man, David Gulpilil, and is the clear protagonist. Yet the other lead role ‘The Fanatic’, played by Gary Sweet, is a white man, and clearly the Antagonist of the story. The differences in both films, then goes much deeper than the plot outline.
