In this essay I think that books 1-4 prepare us well for the introduction of Odysseus. The first time Odysseus is mentioned is in book 1. On the first line he is called ‘resourceful’ (pg 3, 1), so straight away we are given a positive impression of him. Then we move on to the meeting of the gods, where Zeus, father of all the gods, calls Odysseus ‘admirable’ (pg 4, 65), ‘the wisest man alive’ and ‘generous’ (pg 4, 66). It is impressive that such a great father would say this about Odysseus, and it makes the compliments more important and trustworthy. Athene, a goddess, also compliments Odysseus, calling him ‘wise’ (pg 4, 8) and ‘endlessly resourceful’ (pg 8, 205). She also shows her affection by sympathising with him, saying ‘it is for Odysseus that my heart is wrung’ (pg 4, 48). Both of these gods make Odysseus seem great and likeable, and we respect him for being liked by them. Another god, Poseidon, also has strong feelings towards Odysseus, but these are negative. We are shown his hate towards Odysseus with ‘implacable towards him’ (pg 5, 69). This has the effect of making us ....
