Maya Angelou was a poet, a writer, a teacher, and a lecturer. Her favorite people in American History were Frederick Douglass, Patrick Henry,and Thomas Paine. She would get up every morning before dawn to study the words of these people. She would pace back and forth reading to herself and drawing inspiration. She studied these words to prepare for when William Jefferson Clinton was going to be sworn into office as the nations forty-second president. She was going to read her poem "on the Pulse of Morning" in front of thousands of people including President George Bush and his wife,Vice President Albert Gore and his family, Supreme Court justices and members of Congress. Marguerite Johnson was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Bailey and Vivian Baxter Johnson. When she was three years old, her parents got a divorce. Her and her four year old brother Bailey Jr. was sent on a train to Stamps, Arkansas to live with their grandmother, Annie Henderson.
