In this assignment I will be examining the Humanistic model of mental health and will attempt to identify the philosophical presuppositions that relate to this model together with critically assessing how relevant and adequate these presuppositions are. There are many philosophical presuppositions and the main ones I will be considering in this essay will be dualism, materialism, and functionalism together with other philosophies of mind. The humanistic model was developed by a group of American psychologists in the 1950�s. The most influential was seen to be Carl Rogers who is the founder of the Person-Centred Approach. Other influential humanistic psychologists and contemporaries of Rogers include Abraham Maslow and Rollo May. It is maintained by Humanistic theories of personality that humans have a unique motivated need to expand themselves and realise most if not all of their potential.
