In this paper it is my intention to show the history of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). The idea of some other intellectually advanced civilization has been on the minds of astronomers since ancient times. However the technological ability to do anything about this type of research has just come about in the last 50 years or so. The research is accelerating as time passes and the answers to astronomer�s questions are slowly being answered. In 1967, a Cambridge student of radio astronomy research, Jocelyn Bell, had been working on her doctoral dissertation. While examining space through an innovative radio telescope she witnessed what she believed to be radio interference from earth. This is a known phenomenon in radio astronomy. However, no matter what she did the anomaly could not be eradicated from her screen. What she found was that the signal was being generated from inside the galaxy but not from earth.
