Much controversy exists concerning the civil war. Most people agree that the issue of slavery, although sparking the conflict, was not the main cause of the war. Tension had been present in the United States between the Northern and Southern States for Quite some time. The clashing worlds of people, barley united under one flag, could, in my opinion be expected. In the article The Needless Conflict written by Allen Nevins, Nevins writes of his opinion pertaining to presidencies prior to the Civil War. A war which he calls "The Unnecessary War", the same title that Winston Churchill attached to the Second World War. Nevins claims that the three presidents in office before the Civil War (Fillmore, Pierce ,and Buchanan) were inadequate in leading the United States during a time of such disunity and unsettled disparity between the North and South. He especially demerits President Buchanan, a man that Nevins seems to wish never appeared on a ballot, none the less set foot in the White House.
