The novel, �Lord of the Flies,� has many controversial characters. Two of these people, Simon and Piggy, are known for being doomed heroes. A doomed hero is one who has the possibility to rescue others, but has no actual chance to do so, because he will end up being disregarded and eliminated. The reason Simon and Piggy carry this title is because certain things they do cause people to hate them. Although Piggy and Simon are both doomed heroes, Piggy is much more likely to be resented, victimized and ignored. A physical handicap is the perfect target upon which a bully can prey. Piggy�s obesity is more of a reason to be mocked or ridiculed than Simon�s smallness or emotional difficulties. This is proven for Piggy from, ��I don�t care what they call me, so long as they don�t call me what they used to call me at school.�� (Golding, 16). By Simon, though, it is stated, ��If Simon walks in the middle of us,� said Ralph, �then we could talk over his head.� (Golding, 32). This shows that even though Simon has his own problems, they do not treat him as badly as Piggy, and it does not ....
