During the seventeenth, Eighteenth and part of the nineteenth Century Black people were slaves. The white people of North America used the Blacks for their own benefit. African Americans had no rights; they were seen as objects, which could be sold and bought. However the Civil War was a key turning point for the Black African race. Slowly, but with a lot of effort, Africans fought for freedom, equality and liberation. Slaves not only accomplished that but also demonstrated that they were also human beings. The real cause of the Civil War was the multitude of differences arising from the slavery issues that impelled the southern states to rebel. By leaving the Union the South lost voice in national councils. The North went to war to preserve the Union, and the White southerners went to war for independence so this way they might protect slavery. But African Americans saw this differently. This was an opportunity to win freedom and gain respect. The Blacks in the North pledged willingly to fight in the Union Army, but this consent was denied by the President, Abraham Lincoln.
