The State of the Environment I consider myself an upbeat environmental pessimist. I believe humans alter their external environment and can live a sustainable life. I personally try to do as much as possible to live and educate others on how to make environmentally healthy sustainable choices � while living in the modern world. I think being an environmentalist is an altruistic state of mind, or enlightenment that you have to reach. You must extend yourself past your immediate desires and selfishness and realize that your intentions and actions affect not only yourself but the entire world. When you become conscious the �Butterfly Effect� (a theory that suggests the power released by a butterfly's wings can amplify over time to eventually affect weather patterns thousands of miles away) you are motivated to make more sustainable actions. I find pessimism creeping in when I encounter people who agree with environmental causes, but do not take the time or effort to bring about sustainable change. I also think most humans truly do not care how they impact their environm....
