The measures that a father goes to in the poem,� My Papas Waltz�, by Theodore Roehke, is nearly unbearable for a child to face. An unnecessary beating of a child that is dispensable is portrayed clearly in the poem. The vision of ones time in a lifetime being abused is inadmissible. The agony in which one holds in and tolerates is abhorrent. The fortuitous amount of pain and violence that the child�s father put on him is deranged. The author uses a significant amount of figurative language in the poem, as it says, �But I held on like death, such waltzing was not easy� (Roethke line 3), the figurative language here is clearly perceived. The child�s �hold on like death�, in other words means he is holding onto his life and discretion to live. The phrase waltz is a metaphor used for the fathers beating of the child. His father is drunk and not in his right mind; he is so drunk that he is reeking of alcohol. The child....
