Case Background: In 1989 Paul Ingerson, the plaintiff, ventured to a so called bad part of town in order to obtain illegal drugs. While he tried to purchase marijuana the dealer assaulted him and attempted stealing Ingerson's motorcycle. Ingerson ran to a nearby phone and dialed 911 to report the attempted theft. (Ingerson v. Twentieth century Fox Film Corp.; California Court of Appeal) When the police arrived they had a Fox camera crew in tow. The Los Angeles Police department questioned the plaintiff soon recovering his real reasons for venturing to that neighborhood. This ordeal was captured by the camera crew of the reality-based show Cops. Ingerson accompanied the police back to his motorcycle and was emphatic in his knowledge that if he had not gone there for drugs then his motorcycle would not have been in jeopardy.
