The nations began with sending ships off in search of treasure but gradually that developed into the colonization of the new lands that had discovered. Although the English were not the first to set up colonies in this New World, they were the first to establish successful colonies, the first being in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. After settling in Plymouth and the Massachusetts Bay Colony, more and more Europeans were making the pilgrimage to the new world in search of greener pastures. Between the years of 1607 and 1733, the English had settled the Atlantic coast up and down, from Maine to Georgia, with what became know as the 13 colonies. By the 1750�s the colonist�s need for a representative government free from British power was growing. In a desperate attempt to pay off debts brought on by years of war with the French, British had begun unfairly taxing their colonists over in the New World.
