The second female lead in the novel is Lily, who challenges societal norms by living the life of both woman and artist. To convince hesitant readers in the 1920s of a heroic quest in which the Mother and Female are central, Woolf must degrade masculinity while dividing feminine strengths into two characters that together make up her composite heroine. By exposing the novel�s leading male character Mr. Ramsay, an extreme case of the male ego, Woolf�s acts make a motherly world view more pleasing.
