This paper outlines the disease of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and the relationship between BSE and new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). The focus will be on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in both humans and animals which relates back to mad cow disease. The possible reasons for this outbreak are discussed briefly with the main focus being on TSEs, more specifically the prion hypothesis.
