DECONSTRUCTING THE AMERICAN DREAM THE AMERICAN DREAM IN AMERICAN LITERATURE The American Dream is one of a self-made man and promising prosperity and happiness to anyone who works hard. Originally relating to the desire for spiritual and material improvement, the American Dream also relates to the desire for individual liberty, human relations and the achievement of wealth and material well-being. Looking beyond the immediate present, this belief in the future became a national characteristic, partly explaining the speed of American advancement and excellence in so many areas resulting in it being considered the most powerful nation on Earth. The dominant myth of The American Dream is well defined and generally is endorsed by American popular culture, media, literature, drama and poetry. However, this is not always the case as both F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ (1925) and Arthur Miller’s play ‘Death of a Salesman’ (1949) deconstruct the great dream to such an extent, showing a resistant reading of the dream where a large majority of people do not appear to a......
