Exile is a lonely and dark place that most people try to avoid unsuccessfully. In Anglo-Saxon Literature, the theme of exile is a main part of their works. Since they were expertseafarers who sailed the ocean to raid or settle other lands, they were often gone for long periods of time. This is where the theme of exile becomes most prevalent. In poems such as The Seafarer, The Wanderer, and The Wifes Lament, exile is the main theme of each.
In the poem The Seafarer the speaker is telling us what he is feeling as he sails across the sea. He speaks of the sorrow, pain, and fear he feels while being at sea. He refers to his trip at sea as one of being in exile. He says his exile was not full of laughter. Instead, it was full of the death-noise of birds. This shows us that even though he goes out to sea time after time, he is not completely happy with what he does. Yet, his soul calls him eagerly out to sea.
